When you enter the Nasrid Palaces, the walls look covered in endless abstract geometric patterns and flowing script. You might not realize what it says. Much of that intricate script repeats the exact same phrase like a visual mantra. While researchers have cataloged roughly 10,000 total inscriptions throughout the palaces, the vast majority are just one phrase: the motto of the Nasrid Dynasty, “Wa la ghaliba illa-Allah” (There is no conqueror but God). Once you learn to recognize the shape of those Arabic words, you will see them everywhere – stamped into the plaster, wrapping around arches, framing windows, and woven into the tilework.

If you are visiting Alhambra during the summer, you might assume you don’t need sunglasses inside the palaces because of the thick walls and shaded corridors. You absolutely do! The famous Courtyard of the Lions and several other patios are paved with Macael marble. In the Andalusian sun, this brilliant white stone acts like a giant reflector. The glare is incredibly intense, almost like snow blindness. Keep your sunglasses on your head so you can quickly pull them down when stepping out of the dark rooms into the blindingly bright courtyards.
