A great day trip!

My family wanted to see Granada and visit the Alhambra Palace and I chose this tour because it had organized transportation and it came with the tickets to everything we wanted to see. I particularly enjoyed the Alhambra Palace as I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. The architecture is so detailed! I also liked that we had enough free time in Granada to do some souvenir shopping without having to rush.

A tour full of history

This tour was very convenient as it included Costa del Sol departure so my husband and I were able to get on the bus from Malaga. We loved our local guide, Juan! He was very knowledgeable and open to any questions. We learned so much about the history of Andalusia, Granada, and the Alhambra Palace. It also felt surreal to walk amongst walls built in the 13th century and I was blown away by the size of the complex! I can’t recommend this tour enough!

DESCRIPTION

Alhambra Tour from Costa del Sol

WALK THROUGH GRANADA

Your guided tour will start from a pickup point at various locations on the Costa del Sol. The bus will transport you to Granada, where you will set off on a walking tour of the city. Your guide will show you the Granada Cathedral located in the city center and talk about its history. You’ll also see its impressive facade featuring three large arches and reliefs of various religious figures. Located in the Cathedral is the Royal Chapel, where King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile are buried. After this, you’ll have some free time to explore the city on your own before heading to Alhambra.

EXPLORE THE MOST WELL-PRESERVED MOORISH BUILDING IN SPAIN

While you walk through the ancient halls of the 13th-century Alhambra Palace, you’ll see the intricacies of Islamic architecture all around you. During the tour, you will visit the Palace of Charles V, which was built in the 16th century and features an impressive circular patio. You will also see the Palace of Lions, which is one of the most popular areas of the palace, recognizable by a huge fountain surrounded by lions, and the Hall of the Abencerrajes, which features some of the most intricate details in all of the palace. You also can’t miss seeing the Palace of Comares, which served as the throne room where sultans Yusuf I and Mohammed V sat. Your guide will tell you many interesting stories about their reign and the long history of the Alhambra.

RELAX IN THE GENERALIFE GARDENS

Continue your tour by seeing the Generalife Gardens, which kings used as their summer residence. The gardens consist of four terraced orchards, a residential area, and a meadow that surrounds the estate. As you explore the lush green gardens and its Promenade of the Cypress Trees and the Promenade of Walnut Trees, be sure to look for the ancient irrigation channels that kept the gardens thriving throughout history. After the Alhambra visit, you will return to your Costa del Sol city by bus.

PRO TIP

In Granada, you will receive free tapas with most alcoholic beverages and soft drinks (though usually not with coffee, hot tea, or plain water). Stop for a quick drink to try this Andalusian experience during your city exploration! A perfect spot for this is Los Diamantes, highly recommended for their legendary fried seafood. They have a few spots around the city, including a popular location near Plaza Nueva right at the foot of the Alhambra, as well as their bustling original location nearby on Calle Navas.

Have you heard of the legend of the Mexuar tiles?

The Mexuar Hall, located in the Mexuar Palace is one of the oldest palaces in Alhambra. Legend says that it was there that the Sultan used to hide in a platform camouflaged by latticework to hear what people who were going to be sentenced in the Alhambra were saying without them knowing he was there. That way, he could serve justice most objectively since he heard the true stories.

This also earned Sultan the public’s favor and trust as they considered him to be fair and honest. It is said that this was the reason why there was a tile in the Mexuar Hall that said: “Entra y pide. No temas de pedir justicia que hallarla has" which translates to “Enter and ask. Do not be afraid to seek justice for here you will find it”.
